Getting to know your Marketplace

Richard Nixon was so concerned about what the Democrats were up to that he was implicated in the Watergate scandal, which began with a break-in at their national headquarters. While some people may go to extremes, you don’t need to be a crook to find out what your industry and your competitors are doing. Here are some things you can do to learn what’s going on in your marketplace.

Become an industry insider.
Whether you’ve been in business for a few months or several years, it’s important to keep up with the latest industry trends. Join a professional organization for your industry. Almost every industry has national conventions, trade shows and educational sessions you can attend. They also publish educational material, industry reports, magazines and regular e-mail communications to keep you in the know in your industry.

Network to make it work.
While you’re hanging out at those industry events, talk to others throughout the country to find out what’s working and what challenges other business owners are facing. Back home, don’t be afraid to talk with your competition. You’ll learn a lot by just listening.

Shopping is the secret to success.
Have a new employee? Make one of their learning exercises a visit to some of your competitors. They will gain experience about how your industry works and they’ll bring back valuable insights for you to better your business from pricing to customer service. Make it a practice to find out what’s going on around town at least once a year.

3D Video on your CELL PHONE?

picture this - you are hanging out with your friends when a text comes in, but this is a 3d video text, sent from a friends cell phone to yours - could be anything from a sweet skateboard trick from them at the park to the party scene downtown. There's business uses as well - your foreman is out on the job site and has a question - he is able to shoot you a 3D video on your computer explaining the problem he is having. Sound far fetched? it could be here in the next year a Mashable article is says that Sharp thinks they will have a 720p camera ready for cell phones by the end of the year!

Ring in the Season with Specialty Advertising

All across the country you can see the signs of a new season upon us. Lawn mowers are humming, trees are in full bloom and the winter coats have found their way to the back of the closet. Spring has sprung and that can only mean summer will be here before we know it. With summer comes weekends at the lake, barbecues and walks in the park.
What a great time for you to consider offering an advertising specialty item to share some fun while spreading the word of your company. There are countless gadgets you can use to promote your business this summer but here are a few ideas to get you thinking.

Frisbees
Kids and adults love tossing around a Frisbee so why not give them one with your logo on it? Match the colors with your company logo and help give the family something to do why they wait for the hot dogs to grill.

Floating Neck Tote
Loosing your keys or other important items in a lake would be a scary experience. Give your customers a floating neck tote for their valuables. Your company may just save the day.

Small battery-powered fans
When it gets sweltering hot outside a cool breeze is always welcomed. A small battery-powered fan will keep your customers cool while they soak in the sun—and your company will be so cool you may have to get shades.

Check out a full selection of ad specialty items on our website here or email me for ideas!

Customer Service - does it matter

as a inside/outside sales rep I spend a ton of time driving - pretty much living on the road during the day - as such I frequent a lot of gas stations (nothing like an ice cold mt. dew to keep the motor running).

Now you are thinking, so what he stops at a lot a gas stations what the heck is he trying to say. Well that customer service actually does matter. I generally prefer Sheetz - they are clean (mostly) have a good selection of actual food, drinks etc., but on this particular day I stopped at a Turkey Hill.

I have become almost calloused to the poor or non-existent service that they provide. Also the fact that the kid behind the counter looks like he is just waiting for someone to offer him a better job so that he can get out of there (hmm is there a parallel here?)

I entered the store, my jaw nearly hit the floor when the gentleman (a mid 20's black male) welcomed me to the store and made me feel welcome. I was shocked completely - and as I made my purchases, I started to see that whether you work at turkey hill or are Donald Trump your attitude towards your customers does matter.

How are you treating your customers?
Are they getting better service from you than the competition?

Android vs iPhone

There is a few articles going around. It seems that in the first quarter of 2010 something happened that could have long term effect. Android phones outsold the iPhone. Infact Android now has 28% market share. I think this will do a couple things! 1. It is going to drive forward apps for the android system. 2. It is going to keep apple on its toes. Apple was way ahead of the game when they released the original iPhone and they will probably still be at the front of the development curve with their new iPhone generation 4 when it is released. The thing is that now, there is competition. Very close competition RIM has focused on the business world and has struggled to get the perception of their company changed from business phone provider, to smart phone provider, Google has established itself very quickly as not just a smartphone for people outside of AT&T, but as a OS, and a very good OS in its own right. So here is to competition and lots of amazing new smartphones! long live technology and the free market!

Planned Parenthood Thinks Moms Want More Abortions for Mother's Day

I have to admit, this article just makes me sick. But beliefs aside for a moment. I want to look at the marketing side of this.

Planned Parenthood Thinks Moms Want More Abortions for Mother's Day

Planned Parenthood is often at least in my mind paired with abortions and the taking of life. Yes I know they say that they "Planned Parenthood delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide" I.E. we try to help you have sex, and if you get pregnant and don't want the baby, come back and we will give you an abortion. So I question the marketing team at PP, sure there are a lot of people who will not think and donate this weekend. Seriously though, PP is not know for increasing the population. For encouraging mother's to carry full term. So why would you ask for money on a only weekend of the year that has been dedicated to celebrating the work of mothers, who have given untold hours of time raising children. Changing diapers, feeding bottles, helping with homework, preparing for the prom, etc. So many milestones that mothers get to witness . . . first steps . . . first words . . . first sports game . . . but PP has put that all aside and is focusing on their own desire for more money! and they will even send an e-card to your mom, in honor of your donation (lame).

Go celebrate that your mother this weekend and the fact that she gave you life, and didn't settle for donating money for a funky e-card!

Facebook - to quit or stay?

I have been reading some articles lately on the latest privacy "violations" on facebook. I must say that it does scare me to some extent (insert picture of 30 year old single dude in coke bottle glasses w/pocket protector).
I am not a paranoid geek per say, I have a lot of friends and business associates on facebook. But what happens if I decide to stop using facebook? can I actually delete my account? if I do what happens to all those things I posted, and the pictures I uploaded? do they disappear? or does dear friend Mark Zukkerberg get to hang onto them? Just some questions running through my mind right now, here are two interesting articles on why you should, but won't quit facebook!

10 reasons to delete your facebook account

and

10 reasons you'll never quit facebook even if you think you want to

happy musing!

Promotional Products

I had a chance to get to the ASI (Advertising Specialties Institute) Show this week! it was amazing! So much education and knowledge being passed around! It was a great time learning how to serve my customer better! The thing that probably made my time their the most worthwhile was a series of 3 questions!

3 questions to help determine creative promotional products that fit your needs

#1. Who is the end user the promo product going to?

#2. Where is the end user going to be when they need your product or service?

#3. How can I advertise to the end user in their time of need?

take these and run with them!
